Guest House Paradiso (1999) R2 UK Corrections UPDATED

Postby Oliver_Wicks » 24 May 2018 16:12

Hello :-D.

I've just bought a UK copy of Guest House Paradiso (1999) but have noticed some errors in the existing comparison for it. For simplicities sake, I've re-written the comparison and updated it with the correct info:

Title: Guest House Paradiso
Country: UK
Region: 2+4
Releasing Studio: Universal Pictures
Case Type: Amaray Keep Case
Aspect Ratio: 2:35:1
Anamorphic?: Yes
PAL or NTSC?: PAL
Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, German Dolby Digital 5.1
Subtitles (are they optional?): Dutch, English SDH, German (all optional)
Cuts: (and if you know it, precise run time) - 1hr 25mins 52secs (No cuts)
Commentaries: None
Extras: (As written in the menus)

- Making Of (35:51)
- From The Cutting Room Floor (8:17)
- Game
- Trailers:
-- Trailer 01 (1:49)
-- Trailer 02 (0:49)
-- Trailer 03 (0:57)

Notes: The back of the box is riddled with errors:

- Erroneously mentions an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround track that doesn't exist.
- Erroneously states the Aspect Ratio to be 1:85:1, when it's actually 2:35:1.
- Erroneously states the run time of the film as 1hr 26mins, when it's actually 1hr 25mins 52secs.
- Erroneously states the run time of the making of, to be 36mins when it's actually 35:51.
- Erroneously states the disc has animated menus, when this is completely false.
- Makes no mention of the English and German Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks.
- Makes no mention of the Dutch and German Subtitles.
- Makes no mention that Dutch and German menus are available.

- The untitled DVD-ROM game, requires a really old, though unspecified, version of either Mac OS X or Windows to work as it won't run on modern machines.
- The Audio and Subtitle options can be accessed via either the Special Features menu or the relevant buttons on your remote.
- Depending on which menu language you choose on disc boot up, you will either get a static screen of copyright info (when English or German is chosen) or a fully animated copyright warning with age rating info (when Dutch is chosen).
- All of the extra have optional Dutch, English SDH or German Subtitles.
- When Dutch or German is selected as your language, optional Subtitles in that language will be activated when watching the Making Of.
- There is an inaccessible German Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track available via your remote when watching the extras but trying to access it, will bring up the error message "Operation blocked by machine".
- With the Dutch menu active, the Special Features menu is misspelt as "Extra's".
- The English Subtitles are very poor and often miss out entire chunks of sentences.
- The "From The Cutting Room Floor" featurette, is made up of outtakes from the film and consists of line flubs and effects blunders.
- Whilst the film is rated 15, the game is rated PG (as per the BBFC website: LINK)

Easter Eggs: None
Amazon ASIN (UK, French, German, USA releases only): B00004YVDN

Thanks Oliver. Some feedback notes:

Oliver_Wicks wrote:- Erroneously states the run time of the film as 1hr 26mins, when it's actually 1hr 25mins 52secs.

It's 8 seconds off. Far from "erroneous". I've maybe seen once or twice ever of a package writing the exact time with minutes and seconds on the packaging.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- Erroneously states the run time of the making of, to be 36mins when it's actually 35:51.

Same here. No bother to mention something 9 seconds off...
If something were say 5 minutes off, it is worth mentioning. Remember that runtimes on packaging is almost always approximate.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- Erroneously states the disc has animated menus, when this is completely false.

Maybe they meant stop motion?!
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- Makes no mention that Dutch and German menus are available.

Again, not a common thing for packaging to mention menu languages, so no need to mention. Now if the packaging mentions various language menus but they are not available, then that is worth mentioning.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- The untitled DVD-ROM game, requires a really old, though unspecified, version of either Mac OS X or Windows to work as it won't run on modern machines.

There are ways to get around this (like VirtualBox) and if we were to go through our database to say what is/isn't compatible anymore it would be a nightmare... plus there are still computers out there that can handle these old features fine.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- The Audio and Subtitle options can be accessed via either the Special Features menu or the relevant buttons on your remote.

This is a normal function so not worth mentioning. Now if the subtitles were NOT switchable or forced, that is worth mentioning.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- Depending on which menu language you choose on disc boot up, you will either get a static screen of copyright info (when English or German is chosen) or a fully animated copyright warning with age rating info (when Dutch is chosen).

- When Dutch or German is selected as your language, optional Subtitles in that language will be activated when watching the Making Of.

Again, a normal function on many DVDs and not worth mentioning.

Oliver_Wicks wrote:- There is an inaccessible German Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track available via your remote when watching the extras but trying to access it, will bring up the error message "Operation blocked by machine".

This is also common where a language track is authored (as the same as the main feature) but not used. Again, not worth mentioning.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- With the Dutch menu active, the Special Features menu is misspelt as "Extra's".

Isn't that how it's spelled in Dutch? :-D
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- The English Subtitles are very poor and often miss out entire chunks of sentences.

It's rare for subtitles to caption 100% of the dialogue. I've seen some terrible ones. It is worth mentioning in reviews if there are terrible grammar or missing portions in subtitles, but hardly a mention in the notes unless it's really messed up - such as the "Ronaldo" Blu-ray's Japanese subtitle track.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- The "From The Cutting Room Floor" featurette, is made up of outtakes from the film and consists of line flubs and effects blunders.

Seems self explanatory. Interesting that the Australian DVD labels it as "Arse Ups" instead.
Oliver_Wicks wrote:- Whilst the film is rated 15, the game is rated PG (as per the BBFC website: LINK)

It's fairly common for extras to have a different rating from the film, again not really worth mentioning.

Thanks for all the info. Added!

Ok, fair enough - I figured I'd put all that info out there in case it was needed, as I'm very sensitive to even the tiniest errors so just wrote down everything as I found it :).
