Hitchhiker's Guide (TV) (1981) Blu-ray NO UPDATE

Postby Darrel_Griffin » 06 Mar 2019 08:41

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (TV) (Blu-Ray) (1981)

I own:

United Kingdom - BBC Anniversary Collector's Edition

and according to my TV, the picture is 1080p, NOT 1080i. It is 50Hz as stated. Presumably the discs could only be 1080i if my system is converting the signal to 1080p at some point. However, this seems highly unlikely, as I have other Blu-rays which my TV reports as being 1080i 50Hz, so why would this release be treated differently?

I assume the BBC Special Edition release is the same.

Blu-ray.com seems to contradict this though, as it also states that it is 1080i:

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I have just noticed that the back of the case states that it is 1080i, so this is likely where this "information" is being taken from. However, I would say that this is incorrect, and that the picture is 1080p.

It should also be noted that, according various reviews, the picture is upscaled, and looking at it close up there are considerable artefacts (somewhat similar to interlacing artefacts, but slightly different). So although the picture quality is an improvement over the DVD releases, it will probably disappoint a lot of viewers.

It is 25fps, not 24fps.

Also, I assume the Special Edition release contains the same discs as the Anniversary release, so this entry should be changed too.

If it's 1080p, it can't be 25fps. I assume you meant 1080i, so we will change it back.

OK, having done more research, it seems that - for the most part anyway - 25fps 1080p is NOT supported by the Blu-ray standard.

This takes me back to my original post, in which I said:

"the discs could only be 1080i if my system is converting the signal to 1080p at some point"

It appears that that is exactly what is happening. My player has various output options, including (amongst others) 1080i, 1080p and 'automatic', but there does not appear to be an option to preserve the original format. I normally have it set to 'automatic', and it seems that this option converts 1080i to 1080p.

I have since tried other discs I own that I had previously tested and found to be 1080i. I can only assume that I had tested them on an earlier player, because my current player converts all of them to 1080p.

Oh well, I guess if life were simple it would be boring...
