So if you have the original English/French track, the English portions have burned in German subtitles, and French parts have forced German subtitles.

Then what is the purpose of the German optional subtitles? What is it used for?

In the menu you can only choose French with German subtitles. But you can manually by remote control choose "no subtitles" at all. If you do that, you still get some parts subtitled. These parts are forced for all the mobile phone/chat portions (which are in French) and the English dialogue in the movie. The French dialogue however is never subtitled if you chose manually "no subtitles".

For most cases with forced subtitles, you cannot change the subtitles with the remote during playback, so they are in fact "forced".

I'm just trying to understand how there can be optional, forced, and burned-in subtitles for the film at the same time. Are there two separate titles? One for the French version and its own set of subtitles, and one title for the German dub with its own set of subtitles? In that case it would be best to set with:

French Version:
German Dubbed Version:

Ok, then the confusion comes from my term "forced". So the subtitles are optional but not really 100%?

I just don't understand how the subtitles are offered, so not sure how to list them.

So when you select the original French/English track, there are optional German HoH subtitles.
And when you select the dubbed German/French/English track, there are optional German HoH subtitles for the German & French audio, burned-in German subtitles for the English audio, and a forced German subtitle stream for French text?

Does this sound right?

In the disc menu, there is no option to choose subtitles seperately. There are only two options: "Deutsch DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1" (German, no subtitles) and "Französisch mit deutschen Untertiteln DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1" (French with German subtitles).

When you select the German dub (German DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, NO subtitles) you still see subtitles for the mobile phone parts (which are in French) and the English audio (so it's not a complete German dub). The layout/design of the subtitles looks like the subtitles you get if you choose French audio, but you can't "make them go away" via remote control (so I guess they aren't "burnt in" but "forced").

When you select the French dub (French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 WITH German subtitles) you get the subs but you can disable them via remote. But if you do that, they are still forced for the mobile phone parts (which are in French) and the English audio parts (so again, it's acutally not a 100% French dub). Layout of the subs looks forced, not burnt-in.

The easy way to check if subtitles are burned-in or forced:

Set the subtitles to "off", go to the scenes with the subtitles for the French on screen text. Press the fast forward button through the scene. If subtitles don't appear at all they are forced. If subtitles still appear when you fast forward, they are burned-in.

Can you check via BD-ROM drive and use BDinfo to scan the disc? Then you will be able to see the subtitle streams.

They still appear if I fast forward (chosen German audio only, no subtitles).

Yeah, I will also check via my drive and scan the disc with BDinfo over the week end for the sub streams.

To be clear, the German dub still has French audio in some portions?
Christian_Bütikofer wrote:Subtitles (optional): German HoH

There are no standard German subtitles but only HoH with captions for sounds and noise?

No, not French, but English. The French is only text on the mobile phone.

The subtitles are only in German HoH.

Here the bdinfo report about the subs:

SUBTITLES:

Codec Language Bitrate Description
----- -------- ------- -----------
Presentation Graphics German 0.000 kbps
Presentation Graphics German 0.000 kbps

I've updated as German (for English portions in German dub), German HoH (optional), and a note that there are burned-in German subtitles for French text.
