Jean Renoir - The Collection - R2 UK ADDED

Postby baggish » 26 Oct 2018 20:20

Jean Renoir - The Collection
7-disc collection by Optimum Releasing, one disc per film

Country: UK
Region: R2
Releasing Studio: Optimum Releasing
Case Type: Slimline keep cases in slipcase
In the case: 12 page booklet (Bernardo Bertolucci recalls meeting Jean Renoir in 1974, Ginette Vincendeau connects Jean Renoir’s work to that of his father Pierre-Auguste, biographical details)
Sources:
- I borrowed it from the library
ASIN: B0056YHMO2 (this ASIN incorrectly says there are six films/dvds in the box when there are seven, Éléna et les Hommes is omitted)

Searching in http://www.studiocanal.co.uk/Classics for director = Jean Renoir suggests that only La Grande Illusion and La Bête Humaine are/were available as stand-alone releases outside the boxset. As this page hasn’t been updated since 2011, it looks like an old page that was abandoned when Studio Canal stopped using the Optimum name.

La Grande Illusion (1937)

Identical to the R2 United Kingdom - Optimum Releasing version
- perhaps add a comment that this is also available in the Jean Renoir - The Collection box set?
- Duration of "The Little Match Girl" 1928 short by Jean Renoir is 31:55 not 31:35

La Bête Humaine (1938)

- http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=35009

Country: UK
Region: R2

Cuts: None http://bbfc.co.uk/releases/la-bete-humaine-1938 (original cinema release was cut, I have not investigated further)
Duration: 95:58
Commentaries:
Extras:
- Theatrical Trailer (3:03)
Notes:
- Also available in the “Jean Renoir - The Collection” boxset
ASIN: (standalone release) B000Z63YXO

In the comparison, the German and UK Warner versions have TV System = NTSC, should be PAL I think

There are a couple of typos in the film synopsis: “falls in love to a Frensh” should be “falls in love with a French”

In the comparison, the R1 is missing from the Cuts section (duration is 96:21 according to DVD Beaver)

Also, if I understand the DVD Beaver page correctly, there is a documentary “Jean Renoir: An Auteur to Remember” on the same disc (R1 disc 3) which isn’t mentioned in the comparison

Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe AKA Picnic on the Grass AKA Lunch on the Grass (1959)

- New DVD for the database

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052765

- http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=39059

Case Type: Keep case
Aspect Ratio: 1.68:1
Anamorphic?: Yes

Soundtracks:
- French/German Dolby Digital 2.0 mono
Subtitles: English (optional)

Commentaries:
Extras:
- On The Vanishing Corporal (Autour du Caporal Épinglé) (2002 documentary featurette) (29:15)
- Theatrical trailer (4:20)
Notes:
ASIN: none (not available separately)

There is some German dialogue in this film so perhaps the soundtrack of the R1 already in the comparison should be updated.

Judging by the DVD Beaver link, the specs of the R1 are not correct e.g. the duration should be 105:28 (96:21 is the duration of the R1 Dr. Cordelier) and there is a documentary “Jean Renoir: An Auteur to Remember” on the disc that isn’t mentioned in the comparison.

Added and updated, though I didn't add the French DVD of La Marseillaise since the review lacked some info.

Hi James, the synopsis for Elena et les Hommes http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=5894 still has the typo "Frensh", and it's been copied to the Blu-ray http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=48739 :-D

Cheers!
