Henry Silva Quadruple Feature

Cry of a Prostitute a.k.a. Quelli che contano (First viewing, YouTube) – 6.5/10
A hitman (Silva) is sent to Sicily by a mafia boss to get rid of two rival mafia family leaders after one of them is caught using corpses of children to smuggle drugs.

Decent but violent Eurocrime drama. Barbara Bouchet (Don't Torture a Duckling) co-stars.

Weapons of Death a.k.a. Napoli Spara! (YouTube) – 7/10
A young police commissioner is hellbent on arresting a vicious mobster named Santoro (Silva) who is terrorizing the city. What complicates the mission is that Santoro is under the protection of an aging godfather. When all his attempts fall through and Santoro escapes imprisonment, the commissioner devices a plan to trap the shrewd criminal.

Above-average Eurocrime action. Leonard Mann (The Unholy Four) co-stars.

Probability Zero (First viewing, YouTube) – 6/10
A team of daredevil commandos led by an American officer (Silva) is dispatched by the Allies on a suicide mission into a secret mountain base in occupied Norway to destroy a new radar system that is seized by Nazi Germans from a crashed British Spitfire.

Mediocre Eurowar action adventure. Maurizio Lucidi (The Designated Victim, The Sicilian Cross) directs.

The Violent Breed a.k.a. Razza Violenta (1984) (First viewing) – 5/10
A Vietnam vet-turned CIA agent is assigned by his former commanding officer-turned CIA big shot (Silva) to eliminate a drug dealer and gunrunner (Woody Strode), who was their comrade in war, operating in a Southeast Asian country.

Incoherent action adventure. Disappointing to know that this was directed by Fernando di Leo who directed the very good Milano Calibro 9 and Il Boss.

Henry Silva is a co-star. The lead actor is played by Harrison Muller (2020 Texas Gladiators, The Final Executioner).

Genre: Action, Adventure, Eurocrime, War
Worth watching? No, unless you are a fan of Henry Silva.
Worth re-watching? Only Weapons of Death.
Bottom-line? For fans of Henry Silva.

Dark Shadows (2012) - Outside of Edward Scissorhands, I'm not a huge fan of the Burton/Depp double act. I did enjoy the humour here though, even if the script was uneven.

Marcel Bozzuffi Double Feature

Stunt Squad (First viewing) – 5.5/10
A criminal gang of protection racket is terrorizing the streets of Bologna by blowing up shops of local merchants who refuse to cooperate. Under widespread public protests and pressures, the police commisioner decides to form a special squad of armed motorcycle-riding cops to combat the uncontrollable crime.

I have never heard of Marcel Bozzuffi (The French Connection) before watching this rather poorly executed Eurocrime action thriller.

Colt 38 Special Squad a.k.a. Quelli della calibro 38 (First viewing, YouTube) – 6.5/10
A police inspector (Bozzuffi) kills a crime boss during a warehouse raid. The brother of the crime boss, a terrorist named Black Angel (Ivan Rassimov) vows revenge and kills the inspector’s wife in cold blood in front of their son. Holding a licence to kill, the inspector assembles a team of four motorcycle-riding cops armed with Colt 38 handguns to take down the terrorist who is planning bomb attacks in the city.

The better of the two. Not on BD.

Genre: Action, Eurocrime, Thriller
Worth watching? No, unless you are a fan of the Poliziotteschi subgenre.
Worth re-watching? No
Bottom-line? For ardent fans of the Poliziotteschi subgenre.

End of Days (First viewing) – 6/10
Hokey mash up of horror, thriller and action. Instead of a cop, Schwarzenegger should have been cast as a gun-totting, devil-hunting priest! :)

The good:
- Arnold Schwarzenegger is in it
- Christian eschatology as a theme
- The atmosphere
- The action scenes

The bad:
- An unbelieving drinker and cop versus Satan!
- Bullets and bombs to destroy Satan!
- Satan can resurrect the dead but can’t locate the girl!
- Satan pees gasoline!
- The horror and action portions don’t gel but the movie tries to be both.
- Christian symbolism overkill
- The scriptwriter

Genre: Action, Horror, Thriller
Worth watching? No, unless you are a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Worth re-watching? No
Bottom-line? The theme is interesting, but the plot too hard to swallow. One of Schwarzenegger's weakest films along with Raw Deal and Junior.

Obscure 70’s Horror/Thriller

The Redeemer: Son of Satan (First viewing, YouTube) – 6.5/10
Six friends are invited to their class reunion at their old high school which, unbeknownst to them, will be their last as a mysterious masked man begins to kill them one by one for retribution.

An atmospheric low budget slasher horror/thriller with creepy synth music that you’ll either like or loathe.

Genre: Horror/Thriller
Worth watching? Yes, if you are into odd slasher horror/thriller.
Worth re-watching? Yes, for its religious undertones.
Bottom-line? Only for fans of odd, obscure and low budget 70’s slasher horror/thriller.

Mardi Grass Massacre (First viewing, YouTube) – 2.5/10
A serial killer is roaming the streets of New Orleans, sacrificing strippers and hookers in a grotesque ritual to appease an ancient god. With little clue, two detectives try to track him down and stop the madness.

Genre: Crime/Horror/Thriller
Worth watching? No
Worth re-watching? No
Bottom-line? A very low budget Z-grade 70's crime horror/thriller with bad acting. Avoid it.

The Twilight People (First viewing) – 5.5/10
Poverty row sci-fi adventure thriller with low budget unconvincing creature make-up. A poor variation of The Island of Dr. Moreau.

I saw both Don Taylor’s 1977 version and John Frankenheimer’s 1996 remake at the cinema. This 1972 American-Filipino co-production is the worst. I can’t comment on the 1932 version as the Criterion DVD I bought years ago is still sealed and hidden somewhere in my cabinet :(

Pam Grier co-stars but she just growls.

Thinking of getting the upcoming VCI BD so I gave it a watch. Not buying it.

Genre: Adventure, Sci-fi, Thriller
Worth watching? No
Worth re-watching? No
Bottom-line? Moderately fun B-movie sci-fi adventure thriller

Zombeavers (2014) - Silly horror which is in the bad but fun category.

One in the Chamber (2012) - Got to give it to Cuba Gooding Jr. No matter how far his star falls he still gives every performance his all. Lundgren phones his in.

and Powerhouse's Harryhausen: Volume 1 set:
- It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955)
- 20 Millions Miles to Earth (1957)
- The 3 Worlds of Gulliver (1960)
A tremendous set quality/extras wise, but this was my first time watching these (I think...) and thought all the films were a little average. Set two has better films and is also sitting here waiting for a viewing.

Norm of the North (2016) - Yikes. One of the worst animated films I've seen in some time.

Land of Smiles (2017) - As far as low budget horror goes, this is actually not too shabby. Plods along a little slow, and often too much time goes by with nothing happening, but the idea is an intriguing one for the sub-genre, and I've certainly seen much worse. The acting is quite disastrous though. A generous 2.5/5.
