Nightmare at Noon (First viewing, YouTube) – 6.5/10
A mysterious albino scientist and his squad of armed men poison the water supply at a southwestern town that turns the peaceful inhabitants into bloodthirsty killers within hours. As the town residents go increasingly berserk, a town sheriff and a handful of survivors must find a way to end the deadly rampage and flee the town.

A hodgepodge of action, sci-fi and thriller (and Westerns!) that leaves a lot of plots - even the ending - unexplained. But this doesn’t mean it’s unwatchable. The first hour is strangely exciting with well-staged action scenes. Then during the climax, as a bonus for those who are fans of the TV series Airwolf, you get to see an extended aerial battle between two helicopters that inexplicably pop up out of the blue – one fighting for our hero and the other for the mysterious albino!

Wings Hauser (Vice Squad, Mutant), Bo Hopkins (Tentacles, Mutant) star, George Kennedy, Brion James (Blade Runner) co-star. Nico Mastorakis (The Zero Boys) directs.

Genre: Action, Sci-fi, Thriller
Worth watching? Yes, if you like silly 80’s B-action sci-fi thriller.
Worth re-watching? Yes, for some silly fun.
Bottom-line? Amusing and silly 80’s B-movie. Recommended.

The Wilby Conspiracy (First viewing) – 7.5/10
A black anti-apartheid activist (Sidney Poitier) and a British mining engineer (Michael Caine) become unlikely fugitives after one of them knocks out in self-defence a police officer who is conducting identity document checks on the street of Capetown. Hot on their trail is a South African State Security agent who is using them to lead his way to apprehend another wanted fugitive named Wilby.

Unexpectedly entertaining old-school adventure drama set in apartheid-era South Africa.

Persis Khambatta (Nighthawks, Megaforce) and Rutger Hauer (Nighthawks, The Hitcher) co-star. Ralph Nelson (Lilies of the Field, Counterpoint) directs.

Genre: Adventure, Drama
Worth watching? Yes
Worth re-watching? Yes, if you’re a fan of Poitier or Caine
Bottom-line? Entertaining 1975 adventure drama with a touch of humour. Worth adding to your collection.

Finished up Manhunt on Netflix - a fictionalised telling of the Unabomber case starring Sam Worthington. Really good 8-part series and another Netflix original success.

Finished 2017 with...

Lavalantula (2015) - Police Academy alumni Winslow and Guttenberg against lava breathing tarantulas. Exactly as it sounds.

Deathgasm (2015) - Really enjoyable little horror with some dark humour I loved.

And started 2018 with...

I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016) - Great performance from Christopher Lloyd in this dark but funny extremely low budget indie horror. Worth checking out.

Piranha II The Spawning - 5.5/10
Another one from my watch-everything-on-video days. I was thinking of picking up the upcoming US BD, so I gave it another watch after 25 years or so!

James Cameron actually directed this?

Genre: Sc-fi, Thriller
Worth watching? No
Worth re-watching? No
Bottom-line? Only for those who find it thrilling to watch mutant piranhas fly.

Freeway (1988) (YouTube) – 6/10
Frustrated by the police investigation of her fiance's murder by a mysterious serial killer on the Los Angeles freeway, an ER nurse joins a former cop to seek and trap the maniac.

The only thing I remember about this thriller is Billy Drago’s creepy performance as the deranged priest and highway serial killer.

Darlanne Fluegel (To Live and Die in L.A), James Russo (Extremities) and Billy Drago star.

Genre: Thriller
Worth watching? Yes, if you like 80’s B-grade thriller.
Worth re-watching? No
Bottom-line? Not a particularly memorable thriller.

The Bye Bye Man (2017) - Typical 'don't say his name or he'll do you in' teen horror without a good enough back story. Disappointing. 2/5

The Transfiguration (2016) - slow burner which clearly borrows heavily from "Let the Right One In" but still manages to be very intriguing in its own way too. 3.5/5

Rise: Blood Hunter (2007) - Overlong, but I always thought this got crapped on too much. Needed more scenes with both Michael Chiklis and Lucy Lui to bring everything together more. 2.5/5

Serial Killer Double Feature

The Strangler (1964) (First viewing) – 7/10
Inspired by The Boston Strangler, this low budget chiller tells about a lonely and disturbed lab technician who commits a string of murders by strangling young women, particularly nurses, with pantyhose.

Surprisingly well-acted by the leading actor Victor Buono (What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? ).

Jack the Ripper (1959) (First viewing, YouTube) – 6.5/10
This can’t hold a candle to The Lodger (1944), which is the most thrilling movie about Jack the Ripper that I’ve watched.

Genre: Thriller
Worth watching? Yes
Worth re-watching? Yes, The Strangler.
Bottom-line? Pretty entertaining low-budget thriller

The Innkeepers (2011) - Am I missing something here? This is another decent average horror from Ti West but I am yet to see why he gets so much love from a lot of horror fans. He hasn't excelled for me yet... 3/5

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) - See my comment in the cinema thread. 4/5

The One-Man Jury (YouTube) – 6.5/10
Sick of the leniency of the justice system, Lt. Jim Wade (Jack Palance), a senior L.A. cop, decides to bring to justice three elusive criminals – a serial killer, a bank robber, a gangster – his way!

I saw this at the cinema. The last 15 minutes of action quite makes up for the rather slow first 75 minutes.

Chris Mitchum, Joe Spinell co-star.

Not on DVD or BD.

Image

Genre: Action, Crime, Drama
Worth watching? Yes, if you don’t mind the made-for-TV feel to it.
Worth re-watching? Yes, for fans of Jack Palance.
Bottom-line? Quite entertaining, especially for fans of Jack Palance.

A feisty police commissioner who doesn’t play by the book (Merli) is transferred from a mobile team to an obscure district police station. When his son is kidnapped by a vengeful psycho who considers him responsible for the death of his father, the commissioner again must play by his own rules to save his child.

The Rebel a.k.a. Poliziotto Solitudine E Rabbia (1980) (First viewing, YouTube) – 6.5/10
A ex-cop and professional bodyguard for high-class businessmen (Merli) hunts down the mastermind of a criminal organization who is responsible for the death of his friend.

Worth re-watching? No, unless you are a fan of Maurizio Merli.
Bottom-line? For fans of Maurizio Merli and the Poliziotteschi subgenre.

Death Wish V: The Face of Death (First viewing) – 6.5/10
Not bad but the least exciting of the series. Feels like watching a direct-to-video feature.

Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller
Worth watching? Yes, for Charles Bronson fans.
Worth re-watching? No
Bottom-line? Only for Charles Bronson fans
