Finally got around to seeing Pacific Rim 6.5/10 it was cheesy and dumb in parts, but overall it was an enjoyable popcorn flick, the visuals were astoundingly good.
Samir: You know there's nothing wrong with that name.
Michael Bolton: There was nothing wrong with it... until I was about 12 years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys. (Office Space)

This Is the End - Great cast and consistently funny, but the best scenes revolve around Emma Watson and Michael Cera, both of whom are not in this enough. 7/10

The Heat - Funny but standard buddy cop movie that works well thanks to good chemistry between Bullock and McCarthy. 7/10

Saw Gravity in IMAX 3D... and Wow, what a film 10/10 in my opinion, despite the story being thin, this film was 90% experiencing the ride and they knocked it out of the park. It was tense and had you on the edge the entire time. The effects were incredible and the 3D was spot on, you truly felt like you were in space the entire time. See it on the biggest screen you possibly can and in 3D, don't skimp on this one.

Hoping to see this in IMAX when I pass through Glasgow next week. Heard nothing but good things, even from Clooney/Bullock dislikers.

Just watched Curse of Chucky via online rental. Good entry into the series IMO, but far from groundbreaking. Fans will enjoy it though, that's for sure. 6/10

A couple of DTV sequels the last couple of days:

Fright Night 2 - I enjoyed the remake with Farrell but this was pretty poor. 4/10
I Spit On Your Grave 2 - If you enjoyed the first, you'll likely enjoy this. 6/10

Both movies are like 1/10. The original ones were WAY better, though not that great either.

It's very poor, more like 3/10.

Couple I forgot about from the last few days:

Empire State - Good cast, mediocre movie. Expected more from two Hollywood actors I'm really liking right now; The Rock and Emma Roberts. 5/10

The Lone Ranger - Not a Johnny Depp fan, and I went into this with very low expectations considering the bad reviews, but it was entertaining enough. Not worth the bad press IMO. - 6/10

Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers - documentary about the legendary Serbian jewel thieves. 8/10

For those interested, this is on BBC iPlayer which is how I viewed it this morning (as an episode of Storyville).

The Place Beyond the Pines 10/10 - terrific modern epic, loved the generational narrative, performances are excellent, overall fantastic, easily the best film of the year.
Samir: You know there's nothing wrong with that name.
Michael Bolton: There was nothing wrong with it... until I was about 12 years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys. (Office Space)

Captain Phillips 9.5/10 - great tension-filled film, terrific performance from Tom Hanks - the best in a long time and newcomer Barkhad Abdi is equally excellent as the leader of the pirates. Easily one of the best films of the year.
Samir: You know there's nothing wrong with that name.
Michael Bolton: There was nothing wrong with it... until I was about 12 years old and that no-talent ass clown became famous and started winning Grammys. (Office Space)

Really? 6.5? What about the film did you not like?

I thought it was terrific.

Also saw Ender's Game 6.5/10 - the effects were great but the film was choppy and the performances felt really flat...

Typical american blockbuster with special effects, happy ending and no scenario!

When I see the poster (French one at least) on which they say:
60s : 2001 A Space Odyssey
70s: Star Wars
80s: Blade Runner
90s: Matrix
00s: Avatar
10s: Gravity

I think the last two are huge mistakes...

This is the End 7/10 - enormously funny, everyone was on fire and Michael Cera steals it early in the film.
