DVD/BR Cover Sleeve Artwork / Reversible

Postby Ewan_McMahon » 18 Apr 2018 13:31

Hi everyone. I wonder can anyone help me with something.

For a long time I've been researching a large number of movie/tv-series titles I'm interested in (hopefully one day) purchasing on DVD or BluRay or something! One thing that keeps cropping up in my research for a few (UK-DVD) titles are quite often just how plain / weird / boring / awful some cover sleeve artwork designs are (at least in my opinion). With some titles (seems like a lot of them are family movie titles), more often than anything the cover artwork designs seem to be a closeup of the head of one of the main characters in the film (taking up most the sleeve cover), against a single colour or relatively plain background. Anyone else find these kinds of sleeve cover designs incredibly lazy? :x

Well anyway, these designs annoy me somewhat so I'm always HOPING! that maybe they have a REVERSIBLE SLEEVE with a much better design (possibly original movie poster design or something) on the other side. Trouble is, there is simply no way of knowing if so-and-so title has a reversible sleeve cover until you get a copy of it (no online stores or anywhere else show any indication). I've seen here DVDCOMPARE some titles are sometimes listed as reversible-sleeve, but there are so many re-issue titles it's hard to keep track of them all and not all necessarily noted in this site database. *NOTE: If I were to try to purchase a title with a "better" artwork design, *on Amazon for example*, there is still no guarantee of what would be received would be the better design - since companies and sellers tend to list all same re-issue titles together in the same section*

The following below are few titles I'm aware of (from my own research list) that are prime examples of these poor artwork designs, I hope and wonder if anyone knows if they happen to have REVERSIBLE SLEEVES, I'd really like to know! NOTE: I know there are multiple re-issues of titles over the years, so there are bound to be multiple DVD sleeve artwork designs (some much better were available at some point) + possibly variations in artwork across the world and BluRay often have designs all their own too (sometime even worse!), but I will focus primarily on (mostly more recent re-issue) UK DVD titles for now...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thunderball-DV ... hunderball

(These are a little different, but ultimately come back to a similar problem with "plain" sleeve designs - this case being somewhat misleading in terms of what the DVD title is actually called):
(Cliffhanger)

(Edge Of Tomorrow)

These are just a few from my own personal (UK-DVD) research-collection that I know of. Anyone know of anymore? Frustrating how the companies feel the need to change the artwork of movie/tv-series titles every few years...

Also another thing slightly off topic - in recent years it seems like there have been more and more titles released that include a CARDBOARD SLEEVE COVER over the plastic-box. What is it with companies doing this anyway? Seems a waste...

(Here are a few CARDBOARD SLEEVE COVERS ONLY titles I know of which ironically also have poor / plain artwork IMO. By the way, I know the DVD-cover-sleeves for the plastic-boxes underneath don't use the same plain artwork as the cardboard designs, but still it's another example of laziness IMO  ):

Undoubtedly there are plenty more not so great designs that I don't know of out there for DVD, BluRay etc, and all over the world probably. Anyone else got any ideas thoughts knowledge (rants ) on this subject? Would love to hear more from anyone if anyone knows more on this subject or has similar feelings about media artwork etc - and maybe you can post your own titles you know of that have designs that are "not so great"...
