The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) BR query

Postby Tim_Rogerson » 05 Feb 2015 16:55

Does anyone know if the Blu Ray is a slightly longer print compared with the old DVD. The running time is now 99m26s whereas the previous DVD was 94m42s (I think there is a typo on our site where it says 92m44s) which translates to about 98m38s. Not sure if the extra time is an ident or extra fade to black at the end or something more substantial. The reason I was asking is that an Amazon poster claims there is now a shot of Janet Munro topless reflected in a bathroom mirror which I don't think was there before.

thanks

I have the original 2001 Network release:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Day-Earth-Caugh ... aught+Fire
and it's 94:38
DVDBeaver shows the 2009 re-issue
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Day-Earth-Caugh ... aught+Fire
but the runtime makes no sense... but then why did Network drop the extras?

The Blu-ray comes from a 24fps source, while the UK DVDs were 25fps PAL speed up transfers, so the runtime is shorter. Content is the same.

As for why Network dropped the extras from the reissue DVD, I'm not exactly sure, but I know the audio commentary and some extras were produced by Blue Underground, so maybe a rights issue.

I am referring to the recent BFI Blu/Ray DVD release which has far more extras that the previous network releases and which seems to have a slightly longer running time allowing for the 24/25 speed up so I wondered if it was a slightly different print..

I believe the UK Blu-ray has restoration credits and information before the movie (or was it after?), which would account for the longer runtime (I'll have to check my copy). I can't do an AB comparison because I only have the Blu-ray and not the DVDs.

The BFI starts with a restoration logo at the start and a BFI logo at the end, all about 20 seconds extra.

The BFI DVD does have the shot of Janet Munro topless reflected in a bathroom mirror. Duration is 95:15.

I have synch'ed the DVD and Blu-ray entries regards discussion of the cut status, and gone with "No known cuts" for now.

BTW
The reason I was asking is that an Amazon poster claims there is now a shot of Janet Munro topless reflected in a bathroom mirror which I don't think was there before.

it's present in the original Network DVD release.
