REWIND NEWS FOR 2006

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Friday 22nd December 2006

Just before the team takes a well deserved break, we'd like to wish our readers and sponsors a very merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and properous New Year. We'd also like to thank you all for your continued support of Rewind and the Rewind Forums and hope that you'll all be with us this time next year.
We've made some giant leaps forward this year thanks to the work of the continuing team members, our new team member Pat and the fact that Adrian took on the additional role of Technical Co-ordinator - which has resulted in a number of significant improvements to the site - oh, that's actually me...stop it...I'm blushing now ;)
Look out for some more improvements which are coming soon in 2007. For now though, we're all off for a mince pie and some alcohol.
Have a great Christmas.
- The Rewind Team

THE CLOCK'S TICKING...

Thursday 13th July 2006

Our 'Please Keep Me' forum has been up for almost a month now but only had 76 posts which suggests that the vast majority of registered users with zero posts are either no longer with us or only ever read the forums. The forum will remain open until the end of the month (31st July) and then we will begin the tidy-up.

However, just in case anyone missed the original news item, here's a reminder of what's happening:

Rewind is now several years old and over that time we have had thousands of visitors register to use our forums. Whilst this is certainly a positive thing, it has led to a situation where the majority of those users don't have a single post in any of the forums and we suspect that this is because they have long since stopped using the forums or only ever read them.

For those reasons, we have taken the decision to open up all the forums for all to read without having to register (although you will still need to be registered in order to post in them).

We are also taking this opportunity to do a mass 'tidy-up' of the user database and will be deleting all users with zero post counts. Now before some of you panic, we have taken account of those who may only contribute once in a while and may therefore not actually have any posts at the moment. If you are one of those users, you need to head along to the special 'Please Keep Me' forum and simply make one post (and one post only please) to let us know that you will require your registered user for posting in the future. This will then give you a post count of at least one and will mean your user is NOT deleted when we do the tidy up.

If you have any questions, feel free to include them in your post.

WIN BLUE COLLAR TOUR AND SUPERMAN DVDS.

Friday 7th July 2006

It's competition time again here at Rewind. First up is the chance to win a R1 copy of 'The Blue Collar Comedy Tour: One For The Road' courtesy of our friends at Paramount. Check out the contest details for more information. Next up is R4 copies of 'Adventures Of Superman' courtesy of Warner Brothers. Further details are available here.

MATHEW'S CLASSIC COMPARISONS

Sunday 2nd July 2006

Summer is well and truly upon us. July is here and so it's time for another batch of Classic Comparisons, this time selected by our youngest member, Mathew. As always there are 20 of his personal favourites (which are highlighted on a random basis to the left and on the main comparisons page). However, clicking them will take you to an overview of all 20 titles, each with a short write up. The respective comparisons can then accessed from there. The page can also be accessed via the Rewind Features menu where you will also find a link to my titles from last month.

HAVE YOU WON?

Saturday 1st July 2006

Our latest competitions have come to an end and the winners will be announced shortly. Check the forums for further details: The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things contest and The Producers contest.

ADDITIONAL SEARCH AND FILTER OPTIONS PLUS NEW AND IMPROVED FAQ

Thursday 22nd June 2006

This weeks improvements have gone live and include:

1. The 'About Us' page (via the link top left) has been updated with a brief 'History Of Rewind', the 'Rewind Team' page and the 'Contact Us' options
2. There's a new and improved FAQ page (available via the Rewind Features link above)
3. The search bar above has also been revised slightly. Those of you who spotted the recent addition of a Director Search option will have noticed that it has disappeared again but don't panic! You will also notice that the original search option has been expanded to include a drop down box. This gives you access to select what you want to search by and you can choose from Title, Director, Year, Country and Company/Distributor. All searches (except Year) are 'like' or 'fuzzy' matches which means you don't even have to bother typing the words in full!
4. Finally, a couple of additional 'filter lists' have been added to the Comparison Statistics area for Titles with: Easter Eggs, Rewind Reviews, DVD Beaver Reviews and Other Reviews.

As always, we hope you find these improvements useful and if you can think of something you'd like to see, be sure to let us know in the Site Feedback Forum.

OUR FORUMS ARE CHANGING...

Sunday 18th June 2006

Rewind is now several years old and over that time we have had thousands of visitors register to use our forums. THE IMPROVEMENTS JUST KEEP ON COMING

Sunday 11th June 2006

Some of you may have already noticed some other changes which have appeared over the weekend.
1) The search options have been removed from the 'Rewind Comparison Database' on the left and the 'Comparison Statistics' area of the main Comparison page. This is because both searches are now available in the black bar at the top of every page.
2) The 'winners by region' list on the main Comparison page has been altered to make it easier to read.
3) A new 'Search by HD-DVD/Blu-Ray titles' option has been added to the main Comparison page to provide you with instant access to ALL the high definition titles.
These my be minor changes but we feel they will make the site even easier to use. Of course, if you feel different, or can think of something you'd like to see, be sure to let us know in the Site Feedback Forum.

ADRIAN'S CLASSIC COMPARISONS

Sunday 11th June 2006

Our brand new classic comparisons feature is now up and running. There are currently 20 of my own personal favourites (which are highlighted on a random basis to the left and on the main comparisons page. However, clicking them will now take you to an overview of all 20 titles, each witha short write up describing why they are in my top 20 list. The respective comparisons can then accessed from there. The page can also be accessed via the Rewind Features menu.

HD AND BLU-RAY COMPARISONS ARE HERE!

Monday 5th June 2006

Ladies and Gentlemen, please allow us to introduce our latest offspring - the Rewind High Definition comparison.

That's right - our dedication to bringing you the best FREE DVD resource in the world continues with our adoption of both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats. All we ask of you is a little patience while we work out the intricacies of these new technologies, especially where there's new terminology to understand, e.g. Dolby Digital Plus (and Dolby Digital TrueHD - which current players can't actually play!). Oh, and before you ask, there aren't any DTS-HD titles yet!

Jari has already written an extensive piece on the formats and added the article to our new "HD Software Forum". You can find it here.

For the moment, you can find these titles by entering (HD in the film search option but there will also be a new 'quick link' added to Comparison Statistics are of the main Comparisons page.

And now the small print!
Please note that we don´t intend to actually compare HD titles with 'standard' DVDs, but we will try to add notes if the HD titles include some exclusive extras.
It's also important to remember, as always, that whilst this resource will always be the best we can make it, it's still important that you do your own homework before you make your purchase.

CLASSIC REWIND COMPARISONS

Sunday 4th June 2006

OK - let's make things a little different. The more observant of you will have noticed a completely new set of images under the 'Classic Rewind Comparisons' banner here on the main page and on the main Comparison page.

These latest films are 20 of my own personal favourites and the plan is that every member of the Rewind team will take a turn at highlighting there own favourites in this way.

Look out for a new Rewind Feature coming soon which will go on to detail why each team member feels strongly enough to choose their 20 films out of thousands.

We may even choose to theme them from time to time - Halloween springs instantly to my mind - I wonder why!

NEW IMPROVEMENTS TO REWIND

Wednesday 31st May 2006

Several improvements have been added to Rewind thanks to our new Technical Manager. These include:

1. The long awaited 'Director' search. All our hard work adding directors to every comparison will at last be worthwhile
2. There are now 'jump to' links at the head of each and every comparison to enable easier navigation of the dvds within the comparison. This improvement has been requested by many users so we are very proud to have this new development
3. The search results now also include the 'overall result'. This is another frequently requested feature and will allow you to see at a glance whether a title is a specific region winner or a draw
4. The list of latest additions/updates list has been expanded to detail the last 30 additions AND the last 30 updates as seperate lists
5. On top of all of that, we have also made some improvements to our 'behind the scenes' area which should make life a little easier for The Rewind Team - which in turn might mean we can get around to adding further improvements in the future

Within the next couple of weeks this improvement will also be implemented:

6. The 'Classic Rewind Comparisons' will get a facelift with more and more titles being added to both remind you of those all-time classics and perhaps inspire you to seek out an unknown obscurity

So, we all hope you will find these improvements worthwhile and continue to use Rewind as your no.1 source for DVD comparisons.

If you should encounter any problems, or indeed can think of other improvements which have not already been raised, feel free to visit the Site Feedback Forum and let us know.

BIG CHANGES TO YOUR NUMBER ONE DVD COMPARISON SITE

Sunday 28th May 2006

It's good news this Whitsun holiday weekend. Having been desperate to make a number of enhancements to both this site and our forums, we have at last found another technical expert and can plough ahead with a number of useful improvements. These include some suggestions which YOU have asked for via the Site Feedback Forum including a new 'search by director' option and 'jump to' links on each and every comparison - which should make navigating those 20 page long comparisons much easier! There is a small piece of bad news though - but we're sure it's something you can all cope with. These improvements will be implemented over the next week or so which may mean that you occasionally experience a few problems while using the site. We ask that you bear with us and be patient. Once the improvements have been made, we will provide you with a full list of the changes and advise you how to report any problems which you may encounter. Well that's about it for now. All you have to do is sit back and get ready to embrace a new Rewind. One which we hope will continue to grow and be a brighter and better experience as the year progresses.

There are new titles added every week and we don't just review the standard, mainstream releases but also some lesser known titles which you may have trouble finding reviewed elsewhere. It doesn't end there either - if you a DVD that we haven't reviewed, and you think you're up to it, why not write a review yourself.

DO NOT BUY A PEUGEOT 206

Tuesday 4th April 2006

Apologies for posting a non DVD related article but this is a very important issue and I believe everyone has the right to know. I have now launched a website called www.dontbuypeugeot.com. This is in response to a potentially fatal engine cut out fault with the Peugeot 206 and the disgusting attitude from Peugeot regarding the situation. The company has been featured on the BBC Watchdog programme twice regarding the problem but so far have done nothing to solve the problem. The website also tells you how staff working for a Peugeot dealership bought our off us and then sold it on telling prospective buyers the car was completely safe (please read the Disclaimer within the article).
