GORAN'S CLASSIC COMPARISONS

Welcome to the sixth in a series of Classic Comparisions features. This month's selection has been chosen by Site Assistant Goran. As always, to access comparisons for any of the films, just click on the cover art.

	1. ALIEN QUADRILOGY I think that the Alien saga is without doubt the best science fiction horror story to date. Fans of the films will notice the small things such as the fact that James Cameron used widescreen computer monitors in Aliens and that was 1986! The aliens are perfectly created to scare you to insanity and the fact that they made these films without breaking the laws of physics a la Star Wars makes me watch them over and over again.		2. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 1979 - COMPLETE SERIES The original series of the Battlestar Galactica was aired back in 1979. In total 21 episodes were produced before the show was cancelled due to low ratings and high costs. In the original series, Starbuck was a man and the Cylons were ALL robots. Like me, many fans didn't like all the changes the new series brought upon us, so watch the 1979 classic series and the true Battlestar Galactica saga.		3. DEEP IMPACT There have been plenty of disaster movies produced, but only a few of them feel realistically correct. Deep Impact is the opposite of Armageddon in that sense and shows very well what could happen if a medium sized asteroid was on collision course with Earth. It has happened before and it will happen again, the only question is when
	4. THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE (REMAKE) Remakes are often bad, but a few of them stick out and I think this one does. The story is almost the same as the original and the atmosphere is also there - albeit updated to today's standard of film making. It's a real good horror, but don't watch it alone!		5. JOINT SECURITY AREA This is a South Korean film from 2000 that really shows the world that Asian film is to be taken seriously. In the DMZ (de-militarised zone) separating North and South Korea, two North Korean soldiers have been killed, supposedly by one South Korean soldier. It's well acted, played and a must see.		6. RE-ANIMATOR This is probably one of the most known horror/splatter movies of all time and is often the first door for young horror/splatter fans. The Millennium Edition from Elite Entertainment offers a lot of extras and DTS sound. Everyone should own it.
	7. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Take the chance to see the ultimate version of the best UFO film ever made! The 131 minute version cuts out the sequence inside the mother ship that never really worked out that well and reinstates a number of scenes never before seen. The second disc of the 2-disc release includes everything you wished for so sit back and enjoy.		8. DAS BOOT: THE ORIGINAL MINI-SERIES I can promise you without a doubt that you won't move from your TV set before the end credits on this one, even if it's 282 minutes in its uncut form. Well, one coffee break is ok then... It's a great submarine film from the second world war.		9. A SIMPLE PLAN What would you do if you found 4 million dollars, just like that? Well, that very question of morality, honesty and integrity is at the centre of this movie. Follow two brothers (played by Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton) to see how they tackle the problem. I loved this film and think it was one of the best films made in 1998.
	10. CONTACT I have read Carl Sagans book "Contact" a few times and it is about finding proof of ET by using radio telescopes. The movie is based on that book although they changed a few things along the way (sadly since I loved the part about "Pi"). There are no attacking space ships or ray-guns in this film, but it includes some really great CGI sequences if you are into that. The important message for the film is to ask questions about God and who we really are in the bigger picture.		11. STAR TREK: VOYAGER This series of Star Trek follows the starship Voyager, lost in the delta quadrant 70,000 light years away from home. Of all the series, I like this series of Star Trek best mostly because it includes advanced technology, like the quantum slipstream drive, Omega molecules and not to forget, the ship's holographic doctor.		12. MISSING IN ACTION 2: THE BEGINNING Chuck Norris plays the part of James Braddock, one of a number of POWs (prisoners of war) in Vietnam. This is actually a prequel to the first movie and you will learn why Braddock is so angry in the other two films. I find this one is the best of the three.
	13. LAST MAN STANDING This is a great action movie by Walter Hill, who is known for making violent movies. I really like Bruce Willis in his role and the gunfights are out of the ordinary. A must see and a must have in your collection.		14. EXTREME PREJUDICE Another film by Walter Hill and this one includes Nick Nolte and Michael Ironside. Texas rangers, elite soldiers and drug dealers meet in one of the most well known movie endings to date. This was one of my favorite movies back in the 80's and it's still a strong film.		15. DEATH MACHINE If you liked the film Hardware (1990) you might also want to take a look at this movie, which might surprise you since it's not that well known. Like most B-movies it borrows ideas from many films, like Aliens and Terminator but it still has it own life and I had a great time watching it.
	16. 2010 I can't help it, but I like the sequel more in this case. 2010 relies on realistic space scenes like the first movie and the monolith is as black as last time. The sequel does not come with new newer before seen spectacular special effects, which made the first film well known but they are still very impressive. We get to learn more about HAL9000 and what the monolith's mission is really about.		17. SWITCHBLADE ROMANCE (HIGH TENSION) This excellent French made horror movie has become well known across the world. I must admit that I have starved for great horror movies since the 80's when the era had its peak and I'm glad that the wait is finally over. This is far from these PG-13 movies that Hollywood produces today and I hope we will see more films of this calibre.		18. TAXI Another French film that is well known around the globe. I find it very funny and like they say with regards to remakes, nothing can beat the original.
	19. SPIRITED AWAY I do not have much time for animated films, but after watching this one I have to admit that it is great, really great. If you must see one animated film, then this is the one.		20. SUPERVOLCANO We have had a few volcano movies in the past, but this volcano eats them all for breakfast. A supervolcano erupts very rarely on Earth and of that we should be grateful since only one of these can end all life as we know it - this is a global killer. The thing I like most about this TV film is that it is down-to-earth realistic in all aspects. Fans of disaster movies must see this film.
