The first movie from the family that's truly ahead of its time!

Your favourite family of the future are here, starring in their first animated feature film! When George Jetson gets a promotion, he moves to outer space with the entire family: Jane, Judy, Elroy, Rosie the Robot and Astro the family dog. But soon the family discovers that George's company is destroying the homes of the Grungies, the friendly underground creatures who live on the same asteroid. With his family's help, George is able to work out a peaceful arrangement that benefits both the ecology and the factory’s modern technology. See a 2,000-level shopping mall, anti-gravity basketball and other wonders of the space age in this delightful movie.

Video

Fabulous Films in the UK has leased the rights to Jetsons: The Movie from Universal and has produced a clone of their 2010 DVD. Opening with a lovely montage of Universal logos that have been used since the studio began. Being an older film - 1990 - I noticed the odd bit of minor damage, but it was very infrequent and manifested itself as the odd tiny speck. Alas, I noticed some compression artefacts here and there, usually consisting of some mild blocking in skies etc. Not enough to really spoil this presentation for the casual viewer, and frankly the routine, juvenile nature of this modest animated feature would preclude hardcore collectors and enthusiasts. This will mainly be purchased to keep the nippers happy and on that score it's a decent presentation.

The film is presented in 1.85:1 PAL, and has solid if slightly muddy colours but good black levels. It looks like a superior Saturday morning cartoon, which of course it is, being a follow-up to the popular Hanna Barbara 1962-63 / 1985-87 TV show. Soft but acceptable transfer for the undemanding; I'm sure a new 4K HD master would produce brighter, more vivid results but it's not likely to happen. In any case casual punters will be satisfied.

Audio

Basic English, German, Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround and Russian Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo tracks.

Subtitles: English SDH, German, Spanish, Czech, Dutch, Greek, Hungarian, Polish.

A modest animated feature made to cash in on the then recent success of the revived version of the venerable animated sitcom, and the image is modest.....and the basic soundtrack is just as modest.

Very basic Dolby Digital Surround tracks are provided with English being the obvious language of choice but all are essentially the same, which is dialogue front and centre with 90% of all other sound elements (music, sound effects) also focussed at the front of the home cinema sound stage. I only noticed the surrounds being used occasionally for music, songs and the odd sound effect. I noticed no use of LFE / subwoofer, not even when I cranked the volume up for the more actionful moments.

I noticed no distortion or hiss, so what we have here is a standard lossy recreation of what was heard in cinemas back in 1990 when the film was released.

Overall

A modest animated feature designed to zap some moolah out of the juvenile set (and their parents) upon it's 1990 theatrical release. The DVD is a no frills way to relive the feature with a juvenile story and characterisations. Basic presentation that doesn't stretch the home cinema setup. I can't see Fabulous Films or Universal ever releasing a Blu-ray so this will have to keep the rugrats happy.
