The Film

Your favourite family of the future are here, starring in their first animated feature film! When George Jetson gets a promotion, he moves to outer space with the entire family: Jane, Judy, Elroy, Rosie the Robot and Astro the family dog. But soon the family discovers that George's company is destroying the homes of the Grungies, the friendly underground creatures who live on the same asteroid. With his family's help, George is able to work out a peaceful arrangement that benefits both the ecology and the factory’s modern technology. See a 2,000-level shopping mall, anti-gravity basketball and other wonders of the space age in this delightful movie.
Video
Independent British distributor Fabulous Films continue releasing titles from their licensing deal with Universal at a lightning pace, with "Jetsons: The Movie" another notch on their worldwide format debut belt. They present this 1990 animated movie in the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The transfer is 1080p and uses and AVC MPEG-4 encode. Now, before I start listing some minor annoyances with this transfer, let me just say that this release is most certainly better looking than the previous DVD release from Universal (and the re-release from Fabulous). Unfortunately, this HD print does appear to have been struck from a dated master, and isn't really at the standard one may hope overall. For me, the biggest problem is that colours are ultimately much more dull than expected. With The Jetsons being one of Hanna-Barbera's most famous entities, and with the futuristic space setting, you would hope the array of reds, purples, violets and blues would really pop on the screen. However, the reality is that although the colours are acceptable, they feel surprisingly lifeless except in a couple of shots usually around the occasional musical number. The print isn't the cleanest either, with various minor instances of speckling, and some slightly more noticeable issues such as two black marks in the background at 8:11, and black spots around George Jetson's face at 25:29. At 32:36, I also noticed some instability for a second or so where a random background character's animation seems slightly misaligned causing some fuzziness and lack of clarity. Overall, this is far from a great transfer, but I have seen worse, and this is an improvement on what I have previously seen. The feature is uncut and runs 81:59.
Audio
Fabulous Films have provided a single lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo track in the original English for this feature, and it is easily the highlight of the disc. Dialogue is generally crisp and clear with only some minor lack of punch during some of the more crowded scenes. The various effects are well utilised and adds a decent level of depth to proceedings, whilst the score by John Debney suits the tone of the feature well, even if it is fairly basic and formulaic. There is a song performed by Tiffany, and that sounds crystal clear (her voice acting is otherwise mediocre). As to be expected for a feature licensed from a major studio, there are no issues with damage such as crackles, pops, scratches, or background hiss. No subtitles have been included.
Extras
Nothing. A featurette on the history of The Jetsons would have been lovely.
Overall
Fabulous Films have released a mediocre disc, of a mediocre film. Fans won't be over the moon, but they will be happy that this is visually superior to the older DVD. It gives me a little hope that we will one day see the original cartoon series receive the Blu-ray treatment! Rent it.
