The Film

I AM ZLATAN is the incredible true story of one’s man’s meteoric rise as a football legend. Facing adversity in an urban jungle, a young Zlatan finds salvation in football and soon discovers his remarkable talent. Against all the odds his confidence and skill catapult him to the top of international football, where he fulfils his dreams playing for Malmo, Ajax and Juventus.

Video

True life drama about the Swedish football star and lensed primarily in Swedish. The only technical information that IMDB has listed at this time is that Arri Alexa Mini LF Gecko-cam lenses were used in it's production. Almost certainly a digitally captured production based on it's look.

Colours are muted but strong, they lack the punch of photochemically produced films. Black levels are deep, contrast is low key in the modern tradition. Detail is solid but obviously limited by being presented by Signature Entertainment on DVD and in standard definition only. I generally find that modern productions have a flat quality on DVD and BD due to the low, low contrast many filmmakers favour. The image here is generally decent but does have this slightly muddy quality due to the contrast choices. The underlying transfer is strong for the format ('B').

Presented on a single layered DVD with a reasonable bitrate considering. Perhaps a punchier image could've been achieved had a dual layered disc been used?

Audio

Swedish Dolby Digital 5.1
Swedish Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo
Subtitles: English (optional)

The soundtrack is pretty undemanding with crowd scenes coming off best in the surrounds. The emphasis here is on the character drama. The scope of the project seems to be made to suit home systems rather than the bigger presentation a cinema environment provides although I'm sure that were this to play via a DCP in a well equipped theatre with loosless sound my rating ('B-') could be raised a notch or so.

English subtitles are optional and well done with the exception that there are some occasions where characters speak in English which have annoyingly been subtitled as well.

Extras

Startup Trailers (4:47):
- Pressure Point (2:19)
- Ice Road (0:41)
- The Ledge (1:47)

The standard trails for current and forthcoming releases from Signature Entertainment.

Packaging

Standard black DVD Keepcase.

Overall

A pretty standard barebones release for DVD with solid if unremarkable image and sound and no extras to speak of. Currently this can be preordered for £7.00 on UK Amazon so at that price this is recommended. As ever, it's a shame that this isn't getting a BD release.
