OVERALL: R2
The UK 2-disc release has the film in the director's preferred 2.25:1 ratio with lengthy extras.
The Spanish 2-dsc release has the film in the theatrical 2.35:1 aspect ratio with lengthy extras including some exclusives.
The US and Canadian releases have the film in an open matte transfer, with an exclusive commentary for the documentary.
GENERAL NOTES ABOUT THE RATIO OF THIS FILM:
The original theatrical ratio of this film is 2.35:1, however the director's preferred ratio is 2.25:1, this was the ratio of the master materials given to ThinkFilm to use for the DVD release. Instead they released the film in 1.78:1 opening the image from the top and bottom. To read more about this go here:

Initially there were conflicting reports about whether the Canadian R1 is in fact 2.25:1 or the same as the US. It has come to light that the Canadian release is exactly the same as the US release with the incorrect ratio, this from a statement by Terry Gilliam himself:
"I'm embarrassed! Having been assured that the Canadian DVD was the correct format, I now discover I was completely misled."
He goes on to say:
"What I recommend for all the owners of the North American Tideland DVD is to get a roll of wide black tape... sorry, before you do that, go out and buy a dozen more copies of the DVDs and pass them out to your friends, then... pause the disc at the Capri Films logo when it flares out into a blue sky. What you see is the correct proportion. Then, unrolling the tape, mask off the black areas on the screen above and below. If you want to leave a little bit more space top and bottom of the logo you will end up with the UK proportion. Then you should just sit back and enjoy. All the information left to right is there. There was no panning and scanning. Just stupidity." -
