    OVERALL: R2

Network release, for added contextual material.

    Cuts:
When originally submitted to the BBFC in 1971, the film had a running time of 88:39 mins and suffered unidentified cuts. The currently-available home video releases (which contain the longest available version of the film) run for 81:41 mins (PAL), which equates to a film-based running time of around 85:05 mins. Whilst Wayne Kinsey's 2007 book Hammer Films: The Elstree Studio Years claims that the film only suffered one cut (a 1s shot of hatpins in a woman's eye), according to information that Tim Lucas has published at his online blog and in Video Watchdog, the Network and Carlton DVDs may retain at least one other BBFC-imposed cut, to a scene in which a character's throat is slashed (see here). This information is TBC and under investigation; if you have any more information about the BBFC's original cuts to this film, please let us know via our forums.

The BBFC's information is available at this link.

One BBFC-imposed cut, to a shot of a hatpin in a woman's eye, was waived for the Carlton release in 2002. The shot is also intact on Network's DVD release.

In America, the film was released in a heavily-edited version; this version of the film, which has been released on videocassette (with an NTSC running time of 81:18 mins) is unavailable on DVD.
