OVERALL: R1
R1 VCI offers the original cut of the film, anamorphic transfer, commentaries, and other extras.
Two cuts of the film are known to exist:
- The original "The City of the Dead" UK cut,
- The "Horror Hotel" US cut, in which the following is missing:
*Most of Patricia Jessel's cursing of the village in the opening scene (~0:50).
*When Christopher Lee and Dennis Lotus have a discussion about belief in the supernatural (when Lotus arrives to pick up Venetia Stevenson), the Horror Hotel print removes a lot of the discussion. (~0:50).
Thanks to rewind user Tim_Rogerson for confirming the differences between the two cuts.
There are also several "cheapo" releases (obviously this is a public domain title): e.g. "Ring For Doom Service: Collection Vol. 1: House On Haunted Hill/The Bat/Horror Hotel" (by "Slingshot"), "Horror Classics Triple Feature, Vol. 5: Little Shop of Horrors (1960)/House on Haunted Hill (1958)/Horror Hotel" (by "Navarre"), "Carnival of Souls/Horror Hotel" double feature (by "Diamond") & single disc releases by "Cheezy Flicks" and "Digital 1 Stop". Simply avoid them all.
There is also a R2 UK release available from Waterfall (under the title “Horror Hotel”). However, we were unable to find detailed and accurate specs. If you own this disc or have a link to a review, then please let us know via our forums. -
